When I was younger I used to think that the ”Old Disney Channel” was a perfect example of a picturesque society. I was able to watch teenagers face adversities vaguely similar to my own with shows like That So Raven, Hannah Montana, Suite Life of Zack and Cody, Wizards of Waverly Place, Sonny With A Chance, or even JONAS. In a way this led me to believe that growing up was not some life-long process but instead more of a 30-minute comedic sitcom where all’s well that ended well.
I realize now as I slowly age into adulthood that the true learning experience has come from watching these young stars move forward from adolescence and mature into their own unconventionality. Whilst walking down their own paths (whether it be toward parenthood, acting careers, personal health, music, higher education etc.) these people represent the fact that who you are has less to do with conforming to society or being who others think you should be and more to do with pursuing a life you have always dreamt for yourself.
Just because their T.V. characters found their identities and purposes so easily and in a 2-4 year stint, doesn’t mean that’s how it will be in reality. Growing up is ultimately more difficult due to the problems people tend to hide such as body image, exposure to drugs/alcohol, social pressures and family problems. This transition can take years but that doesn’t mean the teenage generation is incapable of achieving incredible things. Sure everyone has hurdles to overcome and demons to face but this generation of “Old Disney” has shown me that life goes beyond any and all hardships and that society can never arrange or pinpoint the exact moment that we discover who it is we are truly meant to be.
If you don’t watch Degrassi, I’d like to fill you in on the situation.
A girl named Zoe was too drunk to consent to sex, and was uncouncious when two boys video taped themselves sexually assaulting her. One of the assulters sister found the video and reported the assault. Her family told her to lie and she didn’t.
Zoe had a history of partying and pill popping, so people blamed her saying she was blaming them for her mistakes to a point she tried to kill herself. This was a good episode about how victim blaming is wrong and no one is asking for it
And this is the take back
As a girl who was sexually assaulted at 8 years old, this tells me that no matter what, someone out there will say I asked for it.NO ONE ASKS TO BE SEXUALLY ASSULTED OR RAPED. THAT’S LIKE SAYING I ASKED TO BE ROBBED FOR LEAVING MY DOOR UNLOCKED
Think about how dumb you sound when you victim blame.
